About the series
Avlu (The Yard) is a Turkish prison drama starring Demet Evgar, Ceren Moray and Nursel Köse. Produced by Limon Film and directed by Yüksel Aksu and Hülya Gezer, it is the Turkish adaptation of the Australian series Wentworth and aired on Star TV from 29 March 2018 to 30 May 2019.
Plot
Deniz Demir has suffered years of violence from her husband. One night, during another attack, their daughter Ecem shoots him. To protect her daughter from prison, Deniz takes the blame and is arrested for shooting her husband.
Inside the women’s prison she meets Azra and her friends. Azra and Kudret are the two most powerful inmates, and their groups are constantly at war, while the warden Nihal tries to keep both under control. Desperate to reach her daughter, Deniz turns to Azra’s group for help and is slowly pulled into the prison’s struggle for power.
Why watch it
Avlu was praised for its gritty realism, strong female ensemble and its look at violence against women. It ran for two seasons and 44 episodes on Thursday nights. A return was announced but later cancelled, which made the series a cult favourite on streaming.
