Umutsuz Ev Kadınları is the Turkish adaptation of the American hit Desperate Housewives by Marc Cherry, produced by Medyapım with ABC Studios. Directed by Özlem Bayşu Ünlü and Barış Erçetin, it starred Songül Öden, Bennu Yıldırımlar, Ceyda Düvenci, Özge Özder, Evrim Solmaz and Deniz Uğur. It aired on Kanal D from 2 October 2011 to 21 February 2013 and then on FOX until 19 June 2014, for three seasons and 154 episodes.
On a seemingly perfect street, the lives of a group of women and their families are shaken when one of their neighbours takes her own life. As they try to uncover the reason, their own secrets, marriages and rivalries come to the surface, in a mix of comedy, drama and mystery.
While it follows the American original closely, the Turkish version made many changes to suit local audiences. Several storylines from the US series were dropped or rewritten: for example, some characters’ sexuality, crimes and dramatic disasters, such as a plane crash and a tornado, were left out or replaced, and some characters were given different professions.
With a cast of some of Turkey’s best-known actresses, Umutsuz Ev Kadınları was one of the most high-profile Turkish remakes of an American series, and it remains popular with fans who enjoy comparing it with the original.
