Mehmet Günsür is a Turkish actor, model and producer, internationally known as Şehzade Mustafa in Magnificent Century and for his work in Italian cinema, starting with Ferzan Özpetek’s Hamam. He was born on 8 May 1975 to a family of Tatar descent.
Günsür’s mother was a lecturer and his father an industrial engineer. He started acting at seven in commercials, and at fourteen he appeared in Okan Uysaler’s series Geçmiş Bahar Mimozaları alongside legends Rutkay Aziz, Filiz Akın and Müşfik Kenter.
After the Italian High School in Istanbul, he graduated with honours from Marmara University’s Faculty of Communication. He played concerts with a band and ran a restaurant for four years before acting became his career.
With a friend’s help he auditioned for Ferzan Özpetek’s Hamam (1997). Landing the role convinced him to become an actor, and it opened doors in Italy, where he has worked in films and TV productions ever since.
In Turkey he starred in the drama Bıçak Sırtı with Canan Ergüder, and he played Prince Mustafa, the tragic eldest son of Sultan Süleyman, in Magnificent Century, one of the most watched historical dramas in the world. He has continued to work in Turkish and international film, television and streaming.
Günsür married Italian documentary maker Caterina Mongio in 2006; they have three children.
